The Welsh Government has unveiled a new National Food Strategy, outlining a long-term vision for creating a more connected and resilient food system across Wales.
Announced during the 2026 Royal Welsh Show, the strategy takes what ministers describe as a "farm-to-fork" approach, recognising that food policy extends beyond agriculture to include processing, manufacturing, retail, public procurement, education, health and the wider economy.
The strategy is intended to bring these different parts of the food system together under a single framework, helping ensure that food produced in Wales delivers economic, environmental and social benefits while supporting healthier diets and stronger local supply chains.
A whole-system approach
Rather than focusing solely on food production, the strategy considers every stage of the food journey.
According to the Welsh Government, it aims to strengthen links between farmers, food and drink manufacturers, retailers, schools, hospitals and other public bodies, while encouraging greater use of Welsh produce within public sector catering and procurement. It also highlights the role food can play in supporting the circular economy and improving environmental sustainability.
